A day in a life of an EMT: Prelude

Firstly, I'd like to introduce myself for future references. I'm Mikey, a Nurse/EMT. I work in Lifeline Ambulance Rescue formerly known as Lifeline Arrows.

Here in the Philippines, most people don't know what an EMT is. But they do know what a paramedic is, although the said term is often misused because people here don't know what it really is. EMT stands for Emergency Medical Technician. It's a profession by itself, providing pre-hospital emergency care to patients requiring immediate stabilization of their airway, breathing and circulation so they can reach the closest medical facility alive and as much as possible without any debilitation. The term paramedic is a skill level of an EMT; from an EMT-Basic, it goes up to EMT-Defibrillation, EMT-Intubation/Infusion, EMT-Advanced, and finally EMT-Paramedic. We don't have Paramedic schools here yet, we only have one EMT school which is in Cubao, despite that they only offer up to the second level.. and the only existing Pinoy paramedics in the whole country are only three; they are sort of retired, and two of which are my instructors. So the next time someone introduces himself a paramedic, ask for their license. The EMT will soon be a legally recognized profession here if ever our respectable senators and congressmen ever start to talk about passing bills (starting with this one specifically) on healthcare.

Anyway, this week I am taking up the second level. It's sort of hard, but I am hoping to get an outright passing mark. When I took the first level which was several months ago, I did quite well.. so the staff has expectations from me that I hope to live up to. It's basically a training module for a basic technician to be adept with the use of a manual defibrillator, a 12-Lead ECG and reading various arrhythmias, and what to do with it. Pretty much, it's like pre-hospital Advanced Cardiac Life Support without much of the bulk in medications. I wish to learn a lot from this class, and I hope I can use everything I learn in the field.

I pre-wite my posts since we had rotations here. If you are reading this, then my classes are already over and have already become a the living epitome of the third chain of survival.

  6. Before attending nursing school, I was a former army medic and EMT. Sometimes when I sit in traffic, I tell myself that it would be horrible to need pre-hospital emergency care in the Philippines as much of the golden hour would be consumed en route to the emergency room. How do EMTs in the Philippines adjust to the road conditions and the apparent disregard for ambulances running code?

    ReplyDelete
  7. that's the difficult part really, we try our best to get there as soon as possible. especially in makati during the afternoon, it's so hard to go around traffic. sometimes the dispatcher has to mobilize two ambulance units (when available) from different posts and hope at least one gets to the patient in time. one time we got lucky and passed by a generous traffic police unit, became our convoy to pave traffic and ward off disrespectful motorists :)

  8. @myonee: actually there are 2 schools of EMT existing now. One is in Espana fronting UST, the building where Goldilocks is located. Then there's one in Cubao like the one that has been mentioned by the author. There's supposed to be another one actually which is done once a year only wherein the US paramedic instructors would come here to conduct the training and are tied up with PNRC...

  9. @people who are interested PSEMT/LSTI is the ONLY licensing body recognized abroad when it comes to the EMT profession in the Philippines nowadays. When you go out of the country, they look for your PSEMT license, if you're not affiliated then I hardly think they'd consider you.

Emergency Medicine consultants from UP-PGH, and the two experienced Paramedics (who are the proprietors) educated in the UK are your instructors there. The one in Dapitan is a hack. if you take the USMLE.. let's just say you still have to enroll in LSTI.

anyway just take a peek in their website

Study and you will pass. Take it for granted and fail. Even RNs fail the finals.

  10. I would like to congratulate you (Mikey) for posting this topic, I'am a father of a Nurse RN/EMT and he is about to join me here in Qatar. He completed his training at LSTI and all of our EMT were came from that same training school. I am strongly supporting a call to pass a bill to fully recognized the EMT in the Philippines as a Profession...

  11. Sir,
"The one in Dapitan is a hack. if you take the USMLE.. let's just say you still have to enroll in LSTI."
Are you referring to the Dapitan Fire and Rescue Institute??

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm referring to a school somewhere in Dapitan where a certain Mr. Cuenca is the instructor. I know someone there in Dapitan Rescue and I don't think they offer an emt course there.

  13. Have you heard of PAEMSP? It looks like this organization has a greater chance of becoming a member of the NPHCC IAW S.B 3458 than PSEMT.
BTW do you know Mr.Edward Cuenca personally? Are you aware of his credentials and EMS experience to call him a HACK??

    ReplyDelete
  14. thanks to google, I know what PAEMSP is and apparently it is some sort of messageboard/community for ems people. and your point is? PSEMT has direct reciprocity with AREMT.

I don't have to explain myself. and I don't give a fuck with whatever fancy abbreviations and digits you like to type, its moronic. why stay anonymous? don't you know how to use blogger?

  15. im looking for the meaning of EMT and i found your blog. is there other school offering EMT course? well your blog is very helpfull thanks.

  20. dont brag about LSTI as the only EMT school in The PHilippines coz actually its not there are lots of them CHEERS, BRIGHT, PEMFRI and a lot more..the important is are they recognized by TESDA the governing Body to regulate skills and vocational courses in the PHil.

    ReplyDelete
  21. is this how your institution trained you?made you arrogant and unprofessional? i've met a lot of emt's from your training institution. ikaw lang yung ganyan kayabang. fyi, there is no governing/licensing body for ems personnel like emts' in the philippines.it has yet to be decided.please do not bash people or brand them as hacks.in our country, we need to work as one. ems need a lot of helping hands, not a mouth that barks.

  26. Good day sir! I'm searching the net for EMT's in the country and stumbled here at this site. Mind if I ask the difference from PSEMT from PAEMSP? Are there 2 governing bodies/societies that handle EMT service here in the country? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  27. good morning! i just want to ask is PSEMT is a different school LSTI?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why did PSEMT terminate its affiliation with AREMT??

    ReplyDelete
  29. There is NO legal basis saying that PSEMT is the only licensing body for EMT here in the Philippines and if you claimed that PSEMt is the only one recognize abroad..shut the hell up...Red Cross is offering the said course long before you guys existed. There is one in Zamboanga, Davao and Cebu City. In Cebu aside from Red Cross, Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation(ERUF) is offering the said course and their graduates either came from RC or ERUF had worked abroad as EMT...

    1. Good day to you all.
Would it not be better to unite? If you wish to work overseas then get a EMT qualification and come for the ride. Firstly of course it would help if you Got your govenment to give you REGISTRATION. This will come from the DOH. TESDA only supervises and regulates the training. You have a law that states this should be the case but the Govenment needs to follow through. If other training providers meet the requirements and scope that TESDA mandates then they should be recognised. Get this sorted people as there are 100's of jobs coming up. PSEMT is not registration, like i said that will come from DOH but at the moment LSTI and PSEMT are the strongest hence PSEMT is recognised overseas.. EMT takes 6-8 weeks full time not 2 weeks then you need road time over one year. Thanks, employer of 100's at 10 times what you make at home.

  30. The law in the Philippines requires that all technical and vocational courses must be registered under TESDA, and schools offering emt should follows the training regulations and they have options to add subjects but never to remove anything from the regulations. as of today the (NAC) National Ambulance Company considers AREMT registration since NAC finds out that PSEMT is not a government registry and only LSTI grad are admitted there. schools that offer emt with tesda and AREMT registered are the following, CHEERS, STOUT, PROMPTCARE, WINGS AND LIFE LINE

    Maraming salamat!
